Horn, bell and fog signals by boat length (Rules 33 and 35)

Navigation Rules, lights & bridges · Power & sail

Boats 12 meters (39.4 ft) and over must have a whistle (horn), and boats 20 meters (65.6 ft) and over a bell as well; smaller boats need some other efficient sound signal. In or near restricted visibility, every boat must sound the Rule 35 fog signal for what it is doing, at the set intervals.

Commonly missed
  • Some state rules and handbooks still say a bell is needed from 12 meters (39.4 ft): for example Washington's WAC 352-60-065 (1994) and California's 2017 ABCs handbook. Federal Rule 33 now requires the bell from 20 meters (65.6 ft). Check your state's rules too.
  • Fog signals are required 'in or near' an area of restricted visibility, by day or night, so start them before you are inside the fog bank (Rule 35).
