Europa-style sedan trawler: the upper (flybridge) deck runs aft over the cockpit and out over the side decks, so the walk-around side decks and cockpit are covered. Galley and lower helm share the salon level, often with doors from the helm to the side decks; two staterooms forward (owner's cabin with a centerline queen, small guest cabin to port) usually share one head (one ad lists two). That tells it apart from CHB's 34 and 38 Double Cabins, which have an aft stateroom, and from the CHB/Present/Ponderosa 42 Sundeck, a different boat with the master aft. Pacific Yachting notes the Europa's wide upper deck shelters the windows and lets you leave doors open in rain, but a bow master can be noisy at anchor and the companionway down is steep. Sold as CHB 42 Europa, CHB 42 Europa Sedan or just CHB Europa; model years seen in listings and owners' posts run 1979-1985, but no builder record of production years was found. One owner's 42 Europa came with paperwork calling it a 'Modern Trawler 42' (Modern Boats Corp.), and a by-owner ad calls a 1979 CHB Europa 42 a 'Kadey Krogan Europa 42'; neither link to CHB is confirmed. CHB also used the Europa name on 45-49 ft boats, so check the length. Engines: sources show Ford Lehman 120 hp diesels, single or twin, fitted from new ('standard' here means factory-fitted in the boats found; no builder list of engine options was found). Whether single or twin was typical is unresolved (see disputed). A 1985 listing titled 'CHB 41 Europa Sedan' (41 ft, 42 ft overall for moorage, 13.5 ft beam, single 200 hp Perkins 6HDTA) may be the same model; its figures are shown in disputed for comparison only and were not used to confirm anything. Single-source and unconfirmed: LWL 38 ft and an Ed Monk design credit (both from Boatshed's 1985 listing). Both Boatshed listings describe a solid fiberglass, semi-displacement hull, but hull type is left empty without a builder or brochure source. Deck construction: teak laid over fiberglass sub-decks on at least some boats; the core material is not confirmed for this model. Several listed boats have a bow thruster (one also a hydraulic stern thruster); none says whether it was factory-fitted. Owners' and magazine guides say osmotic blistering is not a common CHB problem, but still have the hull hammer-tested.
Known problems for this model
-
Window leaks and rot in the deckhouse deck
CHB owners' guides say these boats are known for structural damage in the cabin sides from leaking windows, and buyers report rotten frames, stained teak and rot under the side decks. The Europa's overhanging upper deck shelters the windows, but still have the surveyor tap around every window and look for stains below the sills.chmiel.com · trawlerforum.com · pacificyachting.com
-
Screwed-down teak decks over a cored sub-deck deck
Teak planking screwed through the deck lets water into the core, leaving soft spots and loosening deck fills set in the teak. Check the deck's low points and look at the underside from the engine room; many CHB owners have stripped the teak and glassed over.trawlerforum.com · chmiel.com · pacificyachting.com
-
Soft upper (flybridge) deck and its supports deck
The Europa's large upper deck is carried on posts over the side decks; one 42 CHB owner had to rebuild half of it and replace all four supports, and other Europa owners report wet wood cores in the cabin top. Walk the upper deck for soft areas and inspect the posts.trawlerforum.com · trawlerforum.com · chmiel.com
-
Original steel (black iron) fuel tanks fuel
Most CHBs left the yard with steel tanks, which rust from the top where water from deck and fill leaks collects; any other material means they have been replaced. Ask for tank inspection records; replacement usually means cutting the old tanks apart in place and fitting several smaller tanks.chmiel.com · trawlerforum.com · trawlerforum.com
-
Wet or rotten stringers and engine beds hull
The glassed-over wood stringers and engine beds can rot inside, especially where drilled for wiring or soaked with diesel; a soft bed lets the engine mounts and alignment move. Have the surveyor moisture-test and sound them.chmiel.com · trawlerforum.com · pacificyachting.com

Keel seam after a grounding hull
The CHB owners' guide says many hulls were joined along the keel and glassed over, so a hard grounding can delaminate that seam without showing inside. Check the keel closely when the boat is hauled.chmiel.com
-
Original wiring electrical
Unless it has been replaced, the factory wiring will not meet current standards, and wiring quality varied from boat to boat. Budget for inspection and upgrades.trawlerforum.com · pacificyachting.com

No two boats are alike other
Hulls were farmed out to different finishers and many boats were built to order, so layout, deck hardware, tankage and build quality differ even within one model year. Judge each boat on its own survey, not on the model.trawlerforum.com · trawlerforum.com · pacificyachting.com
Engines & parts
Ford Lehman 120 (6D380 / 2715E) parts: good
Factory standard engine — you entered “Ford Lehman 120”
Marinized by Lehman from the Ford of England 'Dorset' 2715E six-cylinder (380 cu in) industrial/truck diesel; Ford built the Dorset base engines 1964–1984. Base-engine internals interchange with the Ford 2715E, and marine-specific parts (raw water pumps, heat exchangers, injection elbows, gaskets, lift pumps, air filters) are widely stocked. American Diesel Corp (founded by former Lehman people) still sells parts, publishes spare-parts lists and gives technical advice. Rebuilt and used 120s are also sold by salvage yards.

Common problems (2)
-
Chronic oil leaks engine
Most 120s weep oil somewhere; owners often trace it to the rear of the engine near the heat exchanger (head/head gasket area) or to the drive seals of the gear-driven injection pump. Moderate oil use is treated as normal on these engines.trawlerforum.com · marineengine.com
-
Fuel leaks at injection pump, lift pump and return lines fuel
Slow diesel drips usually come from loose bleed screws or banjo washers, perished rubber injector return hoses, a failing lift-pump diaphragm, or worn internal seals in the Simms or CAV injection pump, which needs a pump shop to overhaul.yescenters.com
